When a bad sector is encountered by SMART it replaces the sector with a new one from the spare sector pool. The problem is that the data that was stored in the bad sector is still on the hard disk and can not be accessed by the user. Specialist data recovery companies can often regain access to this data. In most cases it is not a problem, however if the bad sectors were to contain confidential information, then there is a small risk that it can be accessed by people with access to specialist data recovery equipment.
