A database of 468,586 stars prepared for use with XEphem The Positions and Proper Motion catalog of S. Roeser and U. Bastian, Astronomisches Rechen-Institut, Heidelberg, was published in 1990, and includes 468,586 stars rather evenly distributed throughout both hemispheres. This averages out to more than 10 stars per square degree. The set includes the original North and South editions plus the extended supplement. The set includes more than 99 per cent of the stars in the original SAO catalog and some 70 per cent of the Henry Draper Catalogue (HD). While the SAO catalog is more or less complete to V=9, with stars as faint as V=10, the PPM catalog is fairly complete to V=9.5, and goes somewhat deeper than V=10. The primary advantage of the PPM catalog is that each star position accounts for proper motion. The position of the star is moved to its location according to the current xephem time when the stars are loaded. The PPM stars may be conveniently reloaded at any time by using the (Re)Load.
